Cleanout Services in Boston

Need more than a single-item pickup? These cleanout services are often relevant for homes, properties, and businesses in Boston.

Trash King handles junk removal in Boston, MA, serving Greater Boston with full-service hauling for homes, apartments, condos, and businesses. We are a Salem, NH based crew about 35 miles north, so Boston is scheduled coverage rather than always same-day work, and we plan routes around the city's parking and tight streets to get the job done right. We haul across Back Bay, Beacon Hill, the South End, the North End, Dorchester, Roxbury, Jamaica Plain, Allston, Brighton, Charlestown, South Boston, and the Seaport, and we know the realities of brownstone stoops, narrow walk-ups, and loading-zone timing in a dense city.

What We Haul in Boston

A lot of our Boston work follows the rhythm of the city. Around September 1, the Allston move-out surge leaves curbs and hallways packed with couches, dressers, and mattresses as thousands of leases turn over at once, and we clear it out so you are not stepping over a neighbor's old futon. We handle triple-decker and brownstone walk-up carry-downs from third- and fourth-floor units, condo and apartment turnovers between tenants, student move-outs near the universities, and office, retail, and storefront cleanouts when a commercial space changes hands.

Massachusetts mattress and textile rules and Boston curbside limits

Since November 1, 2022, Massachusetts has banned mattresses, box springs, and textiles from the trash under state regulation 310 CMR 19.017, so these cannot simply be thrown out. The City of Boston runs curbside collection only for buildings of six units or fewer, and mattresses, Freon appliances, and CRT electronics each require a scheduled appointment with limits on how many items per year. Boston has no resident drop-off transfer station, so larger 7-plus-unit buildings arrange private hauling on their own. Full-service hauling means we do the loading, the stair work, and the legally correct disposal for you.

We are licensed, insured, and biohazard-certified, and we are a Christian- and family-owned company. We donate and recycle what we can rather than sending everything to the landfill. We do not take hazardous materials, gas, or oils. Scheduled and next-day service is available across Greater Boston, with free quotes and no hidden fees. Call (603) 404-0386.

Bulk Items in Boston

The City of Boston provides weekly curbside trash and recycling collection ONLY to residential buildings with six (6) units or fewer; buildings with 7 or more units are NOT serviced by the city and must arrange private hauling. There is NO resident municipal transfer station or household-trash drop-off operated by the City of Boston. Set-out rules: containers/bags out no earlier than 5 p.m. the night before, and no later than 6 a.m. on collection day; trash must be in a lidded container or 2-ply / 0.9 mil (or thicker) bags, and barrels over 32 gallons must have a grab bar. BULK ITEMS work in three ways: (1) FURNITURE (couches, dressers, tables, chairs) can be placed out with your regular curbside trash on your scheduled collection day with no appointment, set neatly beside the trash receptacles. (2) MATTRESSES & BOX SPRINGS have a dedicated free curbside recycling program but are NOT collected without a scheduled appointment; eligibility is limited to buildings of six units or fewer, limited to 10 items per calendar year, with memory foam, innerspring, hybrid, latex, and box springs accepted, and any mattress that is soiled, dirty, or has bed bugs must be bagged. Residents in 7+ unit buildings must arrange mattress disposal through their property manager or a private hauler. (3) FREON APPLIANCES (refrigerators, freezers, AC units, dehumidifiers, water coolers, ice makers) and CRT ELECTRONICS (TVs, computer monitors, laptops) require a scheduled special-collection appointment via BOS:311 (311.boston.gov, the BOS:311 app, or 311 / 617-635-4500); the city will NOT collect these without an appointment; refrigerators/freezers must have doors removed and be emptied of food. Special-collection limits are 10 items per calendar year and a maximum of 5 items per appointment. NOTE the city's special-collection program also routes exercise equipment, construction materials, water heaters, plumbing fixtures, and dishwashers to donation or a private hauler rather than city pickup. There is no published fee for special-collection or mattress appointments.

Household Hazardous Waste

The City of Boston does NOT operate a permanent household hazardous waste (HHW) facility. Instead it holds periodic 'Zero Waste Day' drop-off events (plus smaller Zero Waste Pop-Ups and Yard Waste Drop-Offs) at community locations across the city. Hours: do not arrive before 8:30 a.m. and do not come after 12 p.m. ELIGIBILITY: Boston residents only; bring a photo ID, utility bill, or lease as proof of residency; waste from businesses is NOT accepted. COST: free. LIMITS: 20-gallon limit on paint, motor oil, gasoline, and all chemicals; individual containers must not exceed 5 gallons. ACCEPTED: household chemicals, oil-based paint, motor oil and gasoline, mercury-containing items, automotive items (tires, batteries), electronics, paper shredding, and textiles/clothing. NOT ACCEPTED: asbestos, explosives, radioactive material, commercial waste, construction debris, alkaline batteries, and medical/infectious waste. Event locations rotate across the city, so check the address for each event. The city also maintains a Household Hazardous Waste & Waste Ban Retail Drop-Off Locations list (e.g., retailers that take back paint, batteries, and bulbs). Contact: zerowaste@boston.gov or 617-635-4500.

Junk We Most Often Haul in Boston

Every neighborhood has its own patterns. Here's what we see most often when we get a call from Boston, MA.

  • September 1 'Allston Christmas' mass move-out furniture surge — couches, mattresses, dressers, and particleboard furniture left on curbs and in hallways as thousands of Boston leases turn over on the same date (Allston, Brighton, Mission Hill, Fenway)
  • Brownstone and triple-decker walk-up carry-downs — heavy furniture, sofas, and box springs hauled down narrow third- and fourth-floor stairwells in Back Bay, Beacon Hill, the South End, and Dorchester
  • Condo and apartment turnovers between tenants — full unit clear-outs of furniture, appliances, and household goods for landlords and property managers across the metro
  • Student move-out loads each May and August near the universities — futons, mini-fridges, mattresses, and dorm/apartment furniture (Allston, Brighton, Fenway, Mission Hill, Charlestown)
  • Office, retail, and storefront commercial cleanouts — desks, cubicles, filing cabinets, shelving, and fixtures when a downtown or Seaport commercial space changes hands
  • Basement and storage-unit clearouts in older Boston housing stock — decades of accumulated boxes, water-damaged goods, and obsolete appliances from Dorchester, Roxbury, Roslindale, and West Roxbury single- and multi-family homes
  • Estate and full-property cleanouts in long-held family homes across Dorchester, Hyde Park, and West Roxbury
  • Freon appliances and CRT TVs swapped out of older units — fridges, window AC units, and dehumidifiers that the city only collects by special appointment

Disposal Rules in MA

Under Massachusetts solid waste regulations (310 CMR 19.017), the following materials are banned from disposal at MA landfills, combustion facilities, and transfer stations: lead-acid and other vehicle batteries (since 1990), leaves and yard waste (1991-1992), whole tires (1991), white goods/major appliances (1991), aluminum/metal/glass containers and single-resin plastics (1992-1994), recyclable paper (1994), cathode-ray tubes and other CRT-containing electronics (April 1, 2000), asphalt pavement, brick, concrete, scrap metal, and treated/untreated wood (July 1, 2006), clean gypsum wallboard (2011), commercial organic/food waste from any generator producing one-half ton (1,000 lbs) per week or more (lowered from 1 ton effective November 1, 2022), and — most relevant to households — mattresses, box springs, and textiles (clothing, footwear, bedding, towels, curtains, fabric), both effective November 1, 2022. The Commonwealth contracts with UTEC (utecinc.org) as its statewide mattress-recycling vendor; drop-off at UTEC is currently $30 per mattress or box spring, and most MA municipalities (Lowell, Cambridge, Framingham, Haverhill, and others) use UTEC for curbside collection, while typical municipal mattress fees passed on to residents range from $15 to $65 per unit. As of May 2026 Massachusetts does NOT have a PaintCare or statewide paint stewardship program — the Extended Producer Responsibility Commission recommended one in its January 2026 final report but the Legislature has not yet enacted it (paint must go through municipal HHW events). MassDEP enforces the waste bans at facilities, haulers, and generators under 310 CMR 19.081; illegal dumping under M.G.L. c. 270, § 16 carries fines up to $5,500 first offense and $15,000 subsequent offenses, and willful illegal disposal of hazardous waste under MassDEP authority may reach $25,000 per day plus imprisonment.
