When you need junk removal in Haverhill, MA, we show up ready to do the heavy lifting. Trash King serves the whole Queen Slipper City — from the converted shoe-factory lofts along Washington Street and Wingate Street downtown, to the quiet Victorian streets of Bradford across the Merrimack River, out to Riverside, Mount Washington, Rocks Village, and Ayers Village. Haverhill built its name making shoes on the riverfront, and a lot of those old mills now hold apartments and offices that turn over often. We know the tight staircases, narrow downtown streets, and the mix of historic homes and multi-family rentals that make local cleanouts their own kind of work.
What We Haul in Haverhill
We clear out the loft and apartment move-outs that come with downtown living near the GAR Park and Buttonwoods Museum — couches, dressers, mattresses, and the boxes left behind after a lease ends. In Bradford and Mount Washington we handle suburban garage, attic, and basement cleanouts, plus old appliances, swing sets, and yard-shed junk. Along the riverfront in Riverside and Rocks Village we take on full property and estate cleanouts, and for landlords across the city we turn over multi-family units between tenants. If it is too big or too heavy to carry out yourself, that is what we are here for.
Massachusetts Mattress Ban and Bulky-Item Limits
Massachusetts banned mattresses, box springs, and textiles from the trash back in 2022, and Haverhill sends its mattresses to UTEC for recycling. The city's curbside program also gives each household just one free bulk item a week, and that one item does not even cover mattresses. When you are clearing a whole room or a whole house, those limits add up fast. We handle the sorting, the heavy carrying, and the recycling, so you do not have to track stickers, fees, or pickup days.
Trash King is licensed, insured, and biohazard-certified, and we are a Christian- and family-owned crew. We donate and recycle whatever we can instead of sending it all to the dump, and same-day and next-day appointments are often available across Haverhill and nearby Bradford, Methuen, Lawrence, and Groveland. Call (603) 404-0386 for a free, no-obligation quote with no hidden fees.

Hours: Wednesday 8:00 AM-3:00 PM; Saturday 8:00 AM-1:00 PM (no cash accepted on Saturdays - pay online at HaverhillRecycles.org)
311 within Haverhill, or (978) 358-1311 from outside the city
Permit: Haverhill residents only; proof of Haverhill residency required. A free Yard Waste Sticker (issued at City Hall, the DPW, the Recycling Center, or Shoe City Hardware) is required to drop off yard waste.
Accepts:
This is a RECYCLING DROP-OFF, not a full trash transfer station. Free for residents: mixed paper, cardboard, aluminum and metal cans, glass bottles, plastics #1-7, fluorescent bulbs, textiles, plastic film/bags, waste oil, medical sharps, and scrap metal. Paid per-item drop-offs: appliances $15 each, lawn equipment $15 each, mattresses or box springs $25 each, flat-screen TVs/monitors $20, console/projection TVs $25, passenger tires $5, truck tires $10, and automotive batteries $5.
Will not accept:
Household trash, furniture, building/construction debris, small appliances, Styrofoam, hazardous materials, and food-contaminated items. (Household trash is curbside-only; hazardous materials go to the twice-yearly HHW events.)
Haverhill does NOT have a municipal trash transfer station - household trash is collected curbside by the city's contracted hauler, and the only city drop-off facility is the recycling-only Haverhill Recycling Center at 95 Downing Avenue (see transfer_stations). For bulky items, Haverhill residents have two city paths. (1) CURBSIDE BULK PICKUP: Each eligible household gets ONE free bulk item per week (couches, desks, dressers, and similar), but you MUST schedule it by calling Capitol Waste Services at 1-844-377-1718 at least two (2) business days before your regular trash day, or it will not be collected. Place the item at the curb by 6:00 AM on collection day, and no earlier than 4:00 PM the day before. You can put out more than one bulk item, but additional items carry a per-item charge (see the city's bulk item price list). IMPORTANT: the one free weekly bulk item does NOT include mattresses or box springs. (2) MATTRESSES AND BOX SPRINGS: Banned from Massachusetts trash since November 1, 2022 (310 CMR 19.017 / 19.000), Haverhill recycles mattresses through UTEC. Residents can either schedule UTEC curbside pickup (around $36-$37 per item) or drop a mattress/box spring at the Haverhill Recycling Center for $25 each. (3) APPLIANCES / WHITE GOODS: White goods are banned from MA trash; drop them at the Recycling Center for $15 each, or hire a hauler. Refrigerators, freezers, and AC units contain refrigerant (CFCs) and need proper recovery. For any of these limits - one free item, mattress recycling, appliance fees - a full-room or whole-house cleanout quickly exceeds what the city program handles in a single week, which is where a junk-removal crew fits in.
Haverhill holds two free Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection events per year at the Wastewater Treatment Plant, 40 South Porter Street, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 noon. The 2026 dates are Saturday, March 21, 2026 and Saturday, October 10, 2026. Haverhill residents only; proof of residency required. Limit of 25 pounds OR 25 gallons per vehicle. ACCEPTED: oil-based paints, paint thinners, varnish, stain and shellac; solvents and acids; pesticides, herbicides, and insecticides; poisons; pool and photo/photography chemicals; mercury products (thermostats, fluorescent lamps, thermometers); moth balls and crystals; brake fluid; antifreeze; drain cleaners; and waste fuels. NOT ACCEPTED at the HHW events: latex paint, batteries, propane tanks, electronics, fire extinguishers, motor oil, smoke detectors, and sharps/needles. (Note: latex paint is not a MA-banned material - dry it out with kitty litter and put it in the trash with the lid off. Waste oil, fluorescent bulbs, batteries via scrap metal, and sharps go to the Haverhill Recycling Center instead.) As a junk-removal company we do NOT haul hazardous materials, gasoline, oils, paints, or chemicals - those must go to these city HHW events.

Every neighborhood has its own patterns. Here's what we see most often when we get a call from Haverhill, MA.

- Mattresses and box springs that cannot go in the trash under the MA disposal ban and must be routed to UTEC recycling
- Yard-shed, swing-set, deck, and grill debris from suburban Bradford and Ward Hill backyards

Disposal Rules in MA
Under Massachusetts solid waste regulations (310 CMR 19.017), the following materials are banned from disposal at MA landfills, combustion facilities, and transfer stations: lead-acid and other vehicle batteries (since 1990), leaves and yard waste (1991-1992), whole tires (1991), white goods/major appliances (1991), aluminum/metal/glass containers and single-resin plastics (1992-1994), recyclable paper (1994), cathode-ray tubes and other CRT-containing electronics (April 1, 2000), asphalt pavement, brick, concrete, scrap metal, and treated/untreated wood (July 1, 2006), clean gypsum wallboard (2011), commercial organic/food waste from any generator producing one-half ton (1,000 lbs) per week or more (lowered from 1 ton effective November 1, 2022), and — most relevant to households — mattresses, box springs, and textiles (clothing, footwear, bedding, towels, curtains, fabric), both effective November 1, 2022. The Commonwealth contracts with UTEC (utecinc.org) as its statewide mattress-recycling vendor; drop-off at UTEC is currently $30 per mattress or box spring, and most MA municipalities (Lowell, Cambridge, Framingham, Haverhill, and others) use UTEC for curbside collection, while typical municipal mattress fees passed on to residents range from $15 to $65 per unit. As of May 2026 Massachusetts does NOT have a PaintCare or statewide paint stewardship program — the Extended Producer Responsibility Commission recommended one in its January 2026 final report but the Legislature has not yet enacted it (paint must go through municipal HHW events). MassDEP enforces the waste bans at facilities, haulers, and generators under 310 CMR 19.081; illegal dumping under M.G.L. c. 270, § 16 carries fines up to $5,500 first offense and $15,000 subsequent offenses, and willful illegal disposal of hazardous waste under MassDEP authority may reach $25,000 per day plus imprisonment.
