Bulk Items in Nashua

Nashua residents have three city-run options for bulky items. (1) FREE CURBSIDE BULK PICKUP: The Solid Waste Department picks up the first 5 oversized items per year and the first 4 off-rim tires per year at no charge; additional items are $25 each. Furniture, mattresses, and large appliances all qualify. Schedule by calling (603) 589-3410 Monday-Friday or by submitting the Oversized Item Pickup form on nashuanh.gov by Friday afternoon for the following week. The bulk-pickup program runs mid-April through mid-October only - there is no winter curbside bulk pickup. Items must be at the curb by 6:45 AM on your regular trash day. Brush bundles must weigh under 60 pounds with branches no more than 3 inches in diameter and 4 feet long. Electronics and construction & demolition debris are NOT eligible for curbside pickup and must be brought directly to Four Hills Landfill. (2) DIRECT DROP-OFF AT FOUR HILLS LANDFILL: With a $5 annual residential permit (free for 65+), residents can drop off mattresses, couches, freon appliances, large appliances, scrap metal, electronics, brush, yard waste, and C&D debris at 840 W. Hollis Street during normal hours. Bring vehicle registration. This is the only option from mid-October through mid-April. (3) EXTRA HOUSEHOLD TRASH: The weekly automated cart does NOT take overflow. Extra bags from a move, party, or cleanout must be brought to Four Hills under a $5 landfill sticker per bag. Mattresses are NOT banned from NH landfills (unlike Massachusetts) so no special mattress-only program is required.

Disposal Rules in NH

Under New Hampshire RSA 149-M:27, the following items are banned from solid-waste landfills and incinerators: wet-cell (lead-acid) batteries (since 1991), rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (effective July 1, 2025), electronic devices including TVs, monitors, computers, peripherals, DVD/VCR players, cell phones, and tablets (since 2007), and leaf/yard waste. RSA 149-M:58 separately bans mercury-added products (fluorescent and CFL bulbs, mercury thermostats and switches). Effective February 1, 2025, businesses generating one ton or more of food waste per week must divert it when an authorized facility exists within 20 miles. Contrary to common belief: mattresses are NOT banned from NH landfills (unlike Massachusetts) and as of May 2026 NH has NO statewide PaintCare or paint-stewardship program — Governor Ayotte vetoed HB 451 in March 2026 and the House override failed on April 9, 2026. Illegal dumping under RSA 149-M:15 carries civil penalties up to $25,000 per day plus criminal misdemeanor/felony charges; report to local police or NH DES at (603) 271-2942.
