Salem Transfer Station

101-109 Shannon Road, Salem, NH 03079

Hours: Posted hours: Tuesday and Thursday-Saturday 7:00 am - 2:45 pm; Wednesday 7:00 am - 6:45 pm. Holiday hours vary — verify at salemnh.gov before publication.

603-890-2164

Accepts:

Residents only, permit sticker required. Separated household trash; co-mingled recyclables (plastic, cans, bottles/glass); newspaper and cardboard; brush under 4 inches in diameter; leaves and grass; white goods (washers, dryers, propane tanks); refrigerators with the door removed; scrap metal; electronic waste; automobile batteries; dried latex paint.

Will not accept:

Hazardous materials and commercial waste, including oil-based paint, paint thinner, medical waste, flammables, antifreeze, cement, concrete, asphalt, bricks, rocks, tires, and construction and demolition material.

Bulk Items in Salem

Salem does NOT provide curbside bulk pickup. Residents bring bulk items to the Salem Transfer Station at 101-109 Shannon Road, and the facility is for residents only. PERMIT: a Transfer Station permit sticker is required and must be permanently affixed to the inside top left of the vehicle window. Permits are obtained at the Town Clerk / Collections office with a vehicle registration, and run October 1 through September 30. A resident over 65 receives a first permit at no charge. BULKY COUPONS: three bulky coupons are issued once per household per year and come with the permit. The coupon number must match the vehicle sticker number. Coupons are required for furniture, chairs, couches, stuffed furniture, mattresses, box springs, carpet, vinyl, and siding. Coupons are NOT required for metal, appliances and white goods, or brush and leaves. VEHICLE LIMIT: bulky coupons must be used with a vehicle no larger than a pickup truck or a household-size trailer, so a full-house or multi-room load does not fit the town system. REFUSED OUTRIGHT: construction and demolition material, tires, concrete, asphalt, bricks, and rocks are not accepted at the transfer station at all, with or without a coupon. Solid waste rules are set by Salem Municipal Code Chapter 409. Verify current rules and hours on the Salem NH town website before publication.

Household Hazardous Waste

The Salem Transfer Station does NOT accept household hazardous waste. It refuses oil-based paint, paint thinner, antifreeze, flammables, and medical waste year-round; only dried latex paint is accepted in regular disposal. Salem instead holds a dedicated Household Hazardous Waste Day, historically at the DPW garage parking lot at 21 Cross Street, typically on a Saturday morning in the fall (the 2025 event ran 8:00 am - 1:00 pm on October 18). Dates change annually. Salem coordinates with the NH DES household hazardous waste program; the town contact is the Transfer Station at 603-890-2164. Always check the Salem NH town website for the current year's date, location, and accepted-materials list before publication.

Junk We Most Often Haul in Salem

Every neighborhood has its own patterns. Here's what we see most often when we get a call from Salem, NH.

  • Construction and renovation debris the transfer station refuses outright — drywall, lumber, shingles, and old decking from remodels across North Salem and Salem Center
  • Above-ground pool components, liners, and decking torn down at end of season near Canobie Lake and Arlington Pond
  • Snow blowers, lawn tractors, and yard equipment swapped out ahead of the first storm
  • Move-in and move-out furniture from Tuscan Village apartments and the Depot Village multifamily turnover
  • Mattresses and box springs, which need a bulky coupon and only three are issued per household per year
  • Refrigerators, washers, dryers, and other white goods — accepted without a coupon, but only if the resident can haul them
  • Tires, concrete, brick, and asphalt, which the transfer station will not take under any circumstances
  • Decades of attic and basement contents from older North Salem colonials and Millville capes
  • Hot tubs, sheds, grills, and patio furniture from wooded lots off Hampshire Road and the Route 28 corridor

Disposal Rules in NH

Under New Hampshire RSA 149-M:27, the following items are banned from solid-waste landfills and incinerators: wet-cell (lead-acid) batteries (since 1991), rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (effective July 1, 2025), electronic devices including TVs, monitors, computers, peripherals, DVD/VCR players, cell phones, and tablets (since 2007), and leaf/yard waste. RSA 149-M:58 separately bans mercury-added products (fluorescent and CFL bulbs, mercury thermostats and switches). Effective February 1, 2025, businesses generating one ton or more of food waste per week must divert it when an authorized facility exists within 20 miles. Contrary to common belief: mattresses are NOT banned from NH landfills (unlike Massachusetts) and as of May 2026 NH has NO statewide PaintCare or paint-stewardship program — Governor Ayotte vetoed HB 451 in March 2026 and the House override failed on April 9, 2026. Illegal dumping under RSA 149-M:15 carries civil penalties up to $25,000 per day plus criminal misdemeanor/felony charges; report to local police or NH DES at (603) 271-2942.
